Wine has become the popular drink of choice in today’s culture. Perhaps because it is seen as a “classier” beverage than beer or spirit. Wine is pretty to look at, it tastes good, it enhances food, has a pleasant aroma, and taken in moderation, produces a satisfying, euphoric feeling. A good bottle of wine has replaced cake and flowers as the perfect hostess gift. Whether it is savored alone with a good book or with the family at Thanksgiving dinner, it is an ideal beverage. But choosing a wine can be intimidating for the non-expert. It is sold in supermarkets, discount stores, liquor stores, and even drug stores. In addition, specialty wine stores are popping up everywhere. The vast selection available can be daunting. There are many magazines, books, seminars, and internet blogs to help you in your selection, but they can only offer advice which is based on their tastes. Your tastes may be different. Wineries often give tours which educate the consumer and offer samples to taste. There are many different wines, produced in different areas, using different grapes or combinations of grapes. It is impossible to know them all. If you discover a wine at a winery, a restaurant, or a friend’s house that you enjoy, then add it to your preferred list. But keep in mind, you need not be married to it. Fortunately, the range is wide open and you may have an adulterous relationship with wine without the guilt. So experiment and enjoy!
